A Natural Cathedral of Stone and Sea
Stiniva is not just a beach - it is a geological masterpiece. Two massive rock walls, remnants of a collapsed cave roof, guard the entrance to this extraordinary cove on the southern coast of Vis Island. The gap between them is just 4 meters wide - barely enough for a small boat to pass through.
Once inside, you discover approximately 100 meters of pristine white pebble beach, enclosed by cliffs that rise 50 meters on either side. The water is an almost unreal shade of turquoise, so clear you can see the seabed 10 meters below. The fjord-like setting creates a natural amphitheater of stone that feels like stepping into a lost world.
Legend says pirates used Stiniva as a hideout - the narrow entrance made it invisible from the open sea. Today, it is one of the most photographed spots in Croatia and a must-visit on any Vis Island boat tour.

Swimming Conditions
The water inside Stiniva is calm, sheltered by the surrounding cliffs. Visibility is exceptional - often 15+ meters. The beach is made of smooth white pebbles (water shoes recommended). There is no lifeguard on duty, but conditions are generally very safe for confident swimmers. The swim from the boat to the beach through the entrance takes about 2-3 minutes at a relaxed pace.
Snorkeling along the base of the cliffs reveals sea urchins, small fish, and interesting rock formations. The cliff walls create natural shade in the morning and late afternoon, while midday sun fills the entire cove.
Captain's Tips for Stiniva
Captain Marko's Advice
“I have been taking guests to Stiniva for 10 years and it never gets old. The trick is timing - we aim to arrive before 11 AM when the big group boats show up, or we visit in the late afternoon on the way back from the Blue Cave. Either way, you get the beach almost to yourself.”
Water shoes are essential - the pebbles look smooth but can be uncomfortable on bare feet, especially when entering and exiting the water
Bring a dry bag for your phone and valuables - you need to swim to reach the beach when arriving by boat
Combine with the Blue Cave - Stiniva is on the same island, so most full-day tours include both stops plus lunch in Komiza
No facilities on the beach - bring your own sunscreen, water, and snacks. There is zero shade at midday
The swim is easy - even for average swimmers, the 50-meter swim through the entrance is calm and straightforward. We provide floats if needed
Stiniva Beach FAQs
Why was Stiniva voted the best beach in Europe?
Stiniva won the European Best Destinations award in 2016 for its dramatic natural setting. The beach is hidden behind two massive rock walls that create a narrow 4-meter entrance, like a secret cathedral of stone and sea. The combination of towering 50-meter cliffs, crystal-clear turquoise water, and pristine white pebbles makes it unlike any other beach in Europe.
Can you swim from a boat to Stiniva Beach?
Yes, and this is the easiest and most popular way to reach the beach. Boats anchor in the bay outside the cove and you swim approximately 50 meters through the narrow entrance. The water is calm, very clear, and usually about 23-25 degrees C in summer. Life jackets and swim noodles are available on our boats if needed.
Can you hike to Stiniva Beach?
Yes, there is a hiking trail from the village of Zena Glava on Vis Island. The descent takes about 30-40 minutes along a steep, rocky path - sturdy footwear is essential. The return climb is harder (45-60 minutes). Most visitors arrive by boat as it is far more comfortable and allows you to combine Stiniva with other nearby attractions.
Is Stiniva Beach crowded?
In July and August, Stiniva can get busy between 12 PM and 3 PM when group tour boats arrive. We recommend arriving early (before 11 AM) or in the late afternoon (after 4 PM) for a more peaceful experience. Private boat tours give you flexibility to time your visit perfectly and avoid the midday rush.
What should I bring when visiting Stiniva Beach?
Bring water shoes (the pebbles can be sharp), high-SPF sunscreen, a waterproof phone case for photos, and snorkeling gear if your boat does not provide it. There are no facilities, shade, or vendors at Stiniva, so bring your own water and snacks. A dry bag is useful for keeping belongings dry during the swim entrance.
